Coffee, anyone?

Handymeg

One of my first projects after moving in was creating this coffee station. Actually, I started this before we closed on the house! I love to shop for used furniture. This is a piece I found as soon as I measured this wall, during the inspection.

I knew I would paint it but I needed to see it in the space first. All of my projects end up being a process of discovery. I see what I want in my head, I start collecting, placing, adding, subtracting and just getting a feel for how things will work. I almost never finish a project in one day. Phase one started with just putting all of the necessary pieces on top of the cabinet.

As soon as it was here, I knew it needed more. It needed much more. I decided I wanted to paint it a dark color and I still had lots of black paint left so that was the next step. I tend to try to use up the things that I have laying around instead of buying new because there is no way I could do as many projects as my heart desires with the funds at my disposal. Also, I love reusing, up cycling and reducing the amount of stuff I have stored away. So black paint was an easy choice!

So pretty! I decided to leave the drawers alone and I love how it turned out. Next, I started thinking about more storage. The coffee bar I created at the old house was made up of two kitchen cabinets and a bank of drawers so I had a lot of places to hide things away. This new cabinet only has three drawers, so upper cabinets were the only choice. Since I was working on this during the Covid-19 outbreak, I didn't have much access to buying used items. My second favorite place to buy things for my projects is IKEA. Boy was I happy to find a new cabinet color on their site AND it was on sale! I am in love with all things green and blue so I didn't really care how much they cost (not much). I had to have them! Thankfully, the ceiling height is 9' so I was able to buy decent sized cabinets.

Once I put the cabinets up, I was very concerned about how things looked. They really felt like they didn't belong there. I had already planned on adding shelves between them but, climbing down off the ladder and stepping back to take a look, I almost took them down. I felt a bit deflated because I did not like it. This was one of those times that I had to just walk away for a while. It's kind of like when you're having a heated argument with someone or you're faced with a big decision. Sometimes you have to walk away for a while or sleep on it before moving forward. Thankfully, the thought of having to undo all of that work I put in to get them up there was enough to push me forward with adding shelves.

Ah! Much better! Now, that's not to say I won't change things around a bit more. I'm almost positive I will be painting the wall behind everything. Right now, this is everything I had imagined and more.

Now, where's my paintbrush?
