Barn door sliders!

Handymeg

Moving into this new house, we had two giant alcoves in the front room. They definitely needed to be filled with cool things. Last week, I finished one of them with a space for hanging coats and sitting to put shoes on or take shoes off. For the other alcove, I put shelves up for our giant game collection but the space needed to be covered because it looked so messy.

I decided barn door sliders were the way to go because, although it's not obvious from this picture, the alcove is about 7.5' by 8'. Doors that swing open into the room would take up too much space. I was worried about barn door sliders too since they would need to be so big that the weight could get to be too much. Then I wondered how much money I would need to spend to find the right size doors. So I figured I should make them. I have always wanted to so win-win! First, the hardware needed to be put up.

Next, it took some measuring and creativity to decide what materials I needed to create the doors. I decided to find the best looking 1/2" 4 by 8 sheets I could. They were pretty light, so I was happy.

When I finished up the other alcove I, somehow, ended up with an extra sheet of corrugated metal. I love using up materials I already have on hand so I knew I wanted to use it for the doors. All I needed was trim to go around it to make it look more like a door. I decided to paint the top with chalkboard paint because that's always fun. Then I decided to paint the trim the same color as the trim around the other alcove. I spent almost a full day painting all of the parts.

Then it was just a matter of assembling all of the parts.

Once it was all put together, I stood it up and realized it was too tall so I had to chop some of the bottom off.

Then I had to install the door hardware.

With a little help from my son, I was able to hook them onto the track. I love how they turned out!

There's one more thing I can say I've done. I created custom barn door sliders. You can see the scale of them in the last picture. That bench was made from a full size bed.

Onto the next project! Now where's my vice grips?
